Our Purpose
The GreenMark Alliance is a UK-registered, not-for-profit organisation established to govern and administer the GreenMark certification scheme for digital products and services.
Our purpose is to ensure that claims of digital sustainability are credible, comparable, and enable meaningful environmental improvement.
What we do
The Alliance is responsible for:
- Defining and maintaining GreenMark scheme documents, schedules and certification criteria
- Setting certification requirements, controls, and decision rules
- Licensing and overseeing approved certification bodies
- Governing certification decisions, certificates, and certification periods
- Protecting the GreenMark mark and scheme integrity
We do not provide consultancy or certification services.
Governance and participation:
The Governing Board and Advisory Group are not operated on a pay-to-play basis.
Participation is based on time commitment, expertise, and contribution to the purpose of the Alliance, including:
- Providing independent oversight and challenge
- Contributing technical, regulatory, or sector expertise
- Supporting the integrity and evolution of the GreenMark scheme
This approach ensures that governance remains independent, credible, and aligned with the public interest rather than commercial influence.
From certification to continuous improvement
GreenMark supports a full and operationalised pathway approach to environmental impact measurement and management.
Certification reflects current performance while highlighting opportunities for improvement during the certification period. Re-certification enables progress to be demonstrated over time.
The GreenMark is awarded to digital and AI products and services that commit to long term, sustainable management and transparency.
Governed, independent, and trusted
GreenMark is owned and governed by The GreenMark Alliance.
Certification is delivered only by licensed organisations operating under defined scheme rules, licence conditions, and ongoing oversight. An annual licence fee applies to organisations approved by the GreenMark Alliance Governing Board.
